Breaking the Silence: Understanding Mental Health Stigma in India

Stigma takes many forms. Public stigma is the prejudice and discrimination directed at people with mental health conditions. Self-stigma is when a person turns those negative beliefs inward. Institutional stigma is built into policies and systems that limit opportunity.

In many Indian families, distress is hidden to protect reputation or marriage prospects. This silence carries a heavy cost: people delay care until a crisis, and recovery becomes harder.

Dismantling stigma starts with language. Replacing labels with respect, listening without judgement, and sharing accurate information all chip away at the fear that keeps people silent.
